Marie Claire – Interior Design: The Home After Sunset
Marie Claire – Interior Design: The Home After Sunset
In the October 2026 edition of Marie Claire Switzerland, Renata Koglin, interior architect and founder of RK Interiors, signs an article in the Habitat section devoted to autumn light. As the days grow shorter, the light changes and so does the home. Lighting is no longer just a necessity: it is a way to create atmosphere, reveal spaces and make our interiors feel more enveloping.
As the Day Draws to a Close
There is that moment, late in the afternoon, when the last rays pass through the windows and everything seems to take on a different texture. In autumn, this moment arrives earlier and earlier. The home turns inward, and lighting takes on a new role: extending the feeling of daylight and gently accompanying the arrival of night.
Working with Shadow and Light
The secret is not necessarily to light more, but to light better. Rather than a single light source, several points of light bring relief and depth: a lamp beside the sofa, a pendant above the table, indirect light that reveals a wall or highlights the texture of a material. Shadow and light interact in a subtle balance that transforms not only the atmosphere of a room, but also the way we feel in it.
The most beautiful light may not be the one that illuminates the most, but the one that makes us want to stay.
Creating Islands of Light
Light fixtures are no longer simple functional objects. Sculptural or almost invisible, they become part of the architecture and transform our perception of space, even when they are switched off. After nightfall, light draws small territories within the home: a corner for reading, a table to gather around, a living room in which to slow down. Each light source accompanies a moment and an emotion.
This may be one of the pleasures of autumn: as darkness falls earlier outside, we rediscover another way of living in our interiors. More intimate, softer, more enveloping, and designed not only for what we see, but also for what we feel. Because it is not about living with a lot of light, but with the right light.
